I studied Ballet in Cannes in the early 70’s. My dream was to be a "danseuse etoile" ( ballerina ) at the Opera of Paris ! I loved to walk with my girlfriends along the Croisette, every step was ‘a pique, an arabesque, a pirouette’ ; it would take us hours to go from our school l’Ecole Superieure de Danse founded by Rosella Hightower to the Sucquet; on the way we would leap up those famed Festival red carpet steps.
Grace Kelly met her "prince charmant" in Cannes during the Film Festival in 1955 as she was walking up those stairs, and they married a year later. As a young girl I dreamed of looking just like her. She has long been my Fashion Icon- she is one of the most enigmatic and beautiful woman. Her style is timeless and so is her story. Every photograph I have seen of her captures her chic, perfect poise. Her signature look is a style I adore - understated and elegant. As wonderful as she looked on the red carpet in Couture, I think she looked as lovely just wearing a crisp white shirt, a cashmere cardigan, black capri pants, with the perfect scarf around her neck, and of course that Kelly bag! It must have been such a shock to leave Lalaland as an actress, and land in Monaco as a princess.
I returned to the film festival as an adult many times. The last one I attended was for the 50th anniversary, presided by Isabelle Adjani, Gong Li, Tim Burton…There was a great party that went on well into the night; getting up for my 5am Nice-Paris flight very difficult. I wasn't the only one - I looked at the famous faces around me on board - Rosanna Arquette, Liz Hurley, and her then boyfriend Hugh Grant - and realised everyone was struggling. The glamour of the party was a distant memory ?
